Cúchulainn Gaels v Suncroft

24th August 2011

Cúchulainn Gaels Under 13s maintained their 100% record with a good win away to Suncroft on Wednesday evening.  Having beaten the same opposition in a challenge game just a few weeks ago, the Gaels went into this game confident of a win.

All looked to be going to plan in the opening quarter as Suncroft struggled to get the ball while the Gaels had three points on the board and were unlucky not to have had a goal after the Suncroft goalkeeper saved well.  Robert Hanley, Cormac O’Mahoney, JB and Jordan Kaye were all on top in their positions as the Gaels dominated this opening period.  Mid way through the half Suncroft found their rhythm and scored a very good goal to cancel out all the Gaels earlier efforts.  Suncroft  continued to storm forward and scored four consecutive points as the built a steady lead. Two late points from the Gaels left if 1.4 to 0.5 at half time in favour of the home team.

Joint Cúchulainn Gaels managers Tom Moran and Tomas O’Mahoney pointed out the errors of their ways during the half time team talk and the Gaels returned to the field with renewed determination.  The forward line began to move well with Ryan Moran and Jamie Kearns causing lots of problems for the Suncroft defence and it wasn’t long before the sides were level.  A long ball from Cormac O’Mahoney into the Suncroft square ended in a goalmouth scramble before Oran pounced and finished to the net to put the Gaels 1.7 to 1.4 in front.

From then on there was only one team in the game as the Gaels took control in all areas.  Daniel Cawley was solid between the posts, Luke Barry was a rock at full back while the half back line of Robert McGrath, Josh Clinton and Gavin Coakley completely dominated the Suncroft half forward line. An indication of their dominance is that they held Suncroft scoreless for the entire second half.  Robert Hanley, Enda, Ryan Moran and Jamie Kearns were all outstanding during the second half as the Gaels pushed on to record a well deserved 1.10 to 1.4 victory.

Next outing for Cúchulainn Gaels is on Sunday Morning in Kildangan where they play Sarsfields in the Bord na nÓg competition, throw in at 11 am.
