Minor Football Championship Round 2-Abbey Rangers v Rheban

22nd August 2017   at St. Laurences GAA

Abbey Rangers Minors recorded a comprehensive victory over Rheban in Round 2 of the championship on Tuesday evening 22nd August.  Early scores from Brian Day and Daniel Gilbert set us on our way and Josh Lawler and Jack Smyth were battling hard around the middle to keep the supply of ball going in.

We got a somewhat fortunate goal when a long ball into the square ended up in the net off the foot of a Rheban defender but a second soon followed and it was a cracker. Aaron Behan intercepted a Rheban attack and started a move up that swept through the field via Josh Lawler and Robert McGrath and culminated with Daniel Gilbert slotting the ball past the Rheban goalkeeper.

Rheban began to get a grip on the game mid way through the half, our half back line of Dara Lovern, Cian Stafford and Eoin O’Fearghail stood firm and drove the Rangers lads forward at every opportunity. Further scores followed from Jack Smyth, Robert McGrath, Josh Lawler, Shane Lawler and Eoin O’Fearghail as we stormed into a 3.11 to 0.1 lead by half time with Daniel Gilbert bagging a second goal.

In the early stages of the second half the game began to degenerate as our lads continued their dominance and the referee blew a very premature end to the game.

While it was a very comprehensive win in the end, our lads put in a superb display of fast, attacking football and linked up for some great scores. Moorefield are our next opposition on Tuesday evening in Nurney and we’ll need to repeat tonight’s performance to continue our winning ways.
