Abbey Rangers Juvenile Players Rewarded For Their Efforts

Abbey Rangers under 14s, under 15s and under 16s took centre stage in Ballykelly last Saturday evening where they received medals for winning competitions at each level in 2017. Kevin Feely, who performed brilliantly for Athy, Kildare and Ireland's international rules team in 2017, was on hand to present members of each team with their medals. Under 14 coach, Ballykelly's Trevor Holligan started the proceedings by speaking about the expectations placed on his team. Following both county and national Féile victories, Abbey Rangers were regraded from Féile C to Féile B, but unfortunately exited the competition in its early stages. The team's league fortunes were very different, winning six out of eight games, and this form saw them progress to a final where they defeated Milltown in a game that went right to the wire of extra time.

Fergal Gilbert of Kildangan coached the under 15 and under 16 teams this year, and due to the way the
competitions took place, the under 16s were up next. Drawn against Castledermot, St Edwards and Two Mile House in the championship, the team were up against at times. Nevertheless, this team displayed a never-say-die attitude as they claimed the C Championship shield with a 4-11 to 2-14 win over Carbury.

The under 15s played seven matches in their league, facing the likes of Milltown, Maynooth, Ballymore, Naas and Kill. Despite a couple of heavy defeats, the team still put in a hard graft that saw them take on an unbeaten Ballymore Eustace team in the final, where Rangers ran out 2-12 to 1-11 winners.

Well done to all players and coaches, and best of luck to each team for the 2018 season.

Thank you to Kevin Feely distributing the medals, Ballykelly GFC for hosting the event, all volunteers who helped out on the night and all parents and club members for attending.
